[Trivia] Daytona trivia

King of the Chronograph

Developed and patented by Rolex in 2015, the Oysterflex rubber strap features a super-elastic metal blade coated in black elastomer, offering comfort and flexibility while also rivaling the reliability and durability of traditional metal bracelets. This makes the Daytona the pinnacle of Rolex sports models, earning it the reputation of being the "King of Chronographs" among the many chronographs on the market. At its debut, the watch was available in both stainless steel and solid gold. Since 1988, however, 18K yellow gold two-tone and solid gold models with leather straps have been added. Subsequently, a white gold model was added in 2004, a pink gold model in 2008, and a platinum model in 2013, marking the 50th anniversary of the watch's creation, creating a wide variety of models that blend seamlessly with the fashion scene.

Paul Newman

The original Daytona race course was a long, narrow oval with a sunken section that straddled the beach and coastal road.
From 1959, the entire track was paved with asphalt and renamed the Daytona International Speedway. The Cosmograph Daytona, which debuted in 1963, attracted car racing enthusiasts from the late 1960s. Paul Newman, who was not only an actor but also a successful racer, leading his own racing team, also wore a Daytona during races.
He was such an influential figure for Daytona that in the 1980s, collectors nicknamed this model "Paul Newman" due to the contrasting color of the chronograph scale around the outer edge of the dial.

Cosmograph

The brand's first chronograph debuted in 1933 under the name "Cosmograph." Its dial featured a tachymeter to calculate average speed over a certain distance, a telemeter to measure distance, and a pulsometer to measure heart rate. In 1939, it evolved into a modern model featuring a robust, waterproof Oyster case and a hand-wound movement known for its reliability and accuracy. In 1955, a model was released bearing the word "Chronograph" on the dial. The words "Cosmograph" and "Daytona" were not included. 500 were produced annually, but they continued to go unsold and were by no means a success.

The fastest racer in the world

"The first car race was held in Daytona Beach, Florida in 1902, and speed records continued to be broken for many years to come. One of the most successful racers was the British racer Malcolm Campbell. During the early 1930s, when he held the speed record, he always wore a Rolex watch both on the race circuit and off. In 1931, Campbell sent a letter of thanks to Rolex, in which he wrote about his admiration for the durability of the Oyster case.
