Submariner trivia
oyster case | The Oyster case is what makes the Submariner's outstanding waterproof performance possible. An Oyster case is a completely waterproof watch case developed by the British company Oyster. Rolex acquired the Oyster Company in 1926, and after developing the Oyster case, it was used in products boasting high waterproofness, including the Submariner. The manufacturing method is to carve the case out of metal, and screw the back cover and crown to prevent water and dust from entering the case, maintaining a high airtightness similar to that of an oyster shell. It was given this name because of what it does. The Oyster case is considered one of Rolex's three major mechanisms, and a patent application was filed with the Swiss Federal Copyright Office in 1926. |

Reverse rotating bezel | Among rotating bezels, those with a unidirectional rotation prevention function are designed to prevent them from moving clockwise. The ``reverse rotation prevention bezel'' is an important feature that is indispensable for the Submariner. If the watch rotates clockwise (forward rotation) when it hits a rock or photographic equipment, there is a risk that the display will be shorter than the dive time. The Submariner's bezel is engraved with a 60-minute scale, making it possible to accurately measure dive times and decompression stops, which are critical to a diver's life and death. Furthermore, in the current model, Ref. 116610, the unidirectional rotating bezel, which was previously made of stainless steel, has been changed to a ceramic material, improving its absolute scratch resistance. |
