[Trivia] Submariner trivia

Oyster Case

The Oyster case is what makes the Submariner's greatest feature - its outstanding waterproofness.
The Oyster case refers to a completely waterproof watch case developed by the British company Oyster. Rolex acquired Oyster in 1926, and after the development of the Oyster case, it has been used in highly waterproof products such as the Submariner. The manufacturing method involves carving the case out of metal, and then screwing down the case back and crown to prevent water and dust from entering the case interior. This creates a highly airtight seal like that of an oyster shell, hence the name. The Oyster case is considered one of Rolex's three major mechanisms, and a patent was filed with the Swiss Federal Copyright Office in 1926.

Unidirectional rotating bezel

Among rotating bezels, those with a unidirectional rotating function are designed so that they cannot be rotated clockwise. The unidirectional rotating bezel is an essential feature for the Submariner.
If the bezel were to hit a rock, photographic equipment, or other object and rotate clockwise (forward), there's a risk that it would display a time shorter than the dive time. The Submariner's bezel is graduated in 60-minute increments, allowing for accurate measurement of dive time and decompression stops, which are crucial to a diver's life and death. Furthermore, the current model, Ref. 116610, has upgraded its unidirectional rotating bezel from stainless steel to ceramic, making it completely scratch-resistant.
