[Trivia] Explorer trivia

Origin of its creation

In early 1953, Rolex supplied the British team of climbers attempting to reach the summit of Mount Everest with a white dial model, as well as a special Oyster Perpetual model, Ref. 6150, with a black dial, luminous indexes, and a triangle at 12 o'clock.
These watches were equipped with uniquely shaped hour, minute, and second hands coated with luminous paint, and the British team was wearing one of these truly expedition watches when they attempted Everest.
At 11:30 a.m. on May 29, 1953, mountaineers Hillary and Norgay reached the summit of Mount Everest, instantly making Rolex famous. The Explorer was introduced as a watch that could keep accurate time even under the harshest conditions.

Rare model "Ivory Dial"

Among the second-generation Explorer II Ref. 16550 and Ref. 16570, the rare "ivory dial" model is particularly popular in the vintage Rolex market.
There are various theories, but this is a rare watch with a white dial that has aged over time, and as the name suggests, it has a pale beige or cream color. This ivory dial is highly prized by watch enthusiasts, and the darker the ivory color, the higher the price tends to be. In good condition with beautiful tanning, the purchase price can be over 2 million yen.
