Differences between the GMT-Master I and II
The GMT-Master I is the first GMT model produced since 1955 and is a long-selling model. The GMT-Master II is a higher-end model of the GMT-Master I that established a further evolution as a GMT watch. The GMT-Master I and GMT-Master II were sold side by side for about nine years, from 1990 to 1999.
The main difference is the automatic movement they use: the GMT-Master I Ref. 16700 is equipped with the Caliber 3175, while the GMT-Master II Ref. 16710 is equipped with the Caliber 3185 (later Caliber 3186).
As for determining the time zone, the GMT-Master I does not have a independently movable hour hand, so it is determined by using the rotating bezel and 24-hour hand. The GMT-Master II has an independently movable hour hand, so it is possible to read the time zones of three countries. While it is difficult to tell the difference just by appearance, there are clear differences in terms of performance.
GMT-Master II Nicknames
Here we will introduce some of the most common nicknames used by Rolex enthusiasts. They originally spread from watch magazines and have since become commonly used nicknames.
[Pepsi] Blue/Red Bezel: This is named after the color scheme of the carbonated beverage Pepsi. Nickname for the GMT Master with a red and blue bezel.
[Coke] Black/Red Bezel: Like the Pepsi mentioned above, this is the nickname for the GMT Master with a red and black bezel, and is also known as "Coke" or "Coca-Cola."
[Batman] Black/Blue Bezel: It is said that this design was established based on the image of Batman's black suit and blue cape in American comics.
[Root Beer] Brown/gold, black/brown bezel: The colors are derived from the image colors of the American carbonated beverage manufacturer Root Beer.
