[Trivia] Hublot trivia

In-house developed movement

Hublot began developing and manufacturing its own movements in 2010. Until then, they had been using the ETA movement, a standard in Swiss watches. It took four years from conception to completion before their first in-house movement, the Unico, was born. Made from 330 individual parts, the Unico is crafted using a combination of skilled artisans' handwork and cutting-edge high-tech technology. With a power reserve of up to 72 hours and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, it boasts specifications that rival any other high-precision movement.

Collaboration with celebrities

The brand has particularly strong ties to the sports industry, serving as the official timekeeper for Formula 1 and the FIFA World Cup. It has released numerous collaboration models with athletes, including the "Big Bang Unico Usain Bolt" inspired by Usain Bolt and the "Big Bang Maradona" series, inspired by soccer legend Diego Maradona. Beyond sports, the brand has also made waves by releasing limited edition models in collaboration with artist Takashi Murakami and designer Yohji Yamamoto.

Development of a variety of cases

As a manufacture brand, they are not only focused on developing movements, but also on developing case materials. In the same year that they launched the Unico, they introduced 18K King Gold, a specially formulated platinum that is redder than conventional 18K, and the following year, they introduced 18K Magic Gold, a harder and more scratch-resistant material. In 2016, they expanded their range to include colored sapphires, leveraging the extremely transparent sapphire crystal material, and in 2018 they successfully developed a zirconium-based high-tech ceramic that is scratch-resistant except by diamonds.

Marketing genius

Jean-Claude Biver became CEO in 2004 and increased sales tenfold in just four years. In the 1980s, he acquired Blancpain, which was struggling due to the quartz crisis, and revived the company by emphasizing the artistry of mechanical timepieces. He then took charge of Omega at the Swatch Group, where he built it into a popular brand through an ambassador strategy that featured F1 champion Michael Schumacher and supermodel Cindy Crawford. He then moved from the large corporation Omega to Hublot, a small manufacturer at the time, where he once again brought a breath of fresh air to the watch industry with revolutionary ideas such as the Big Bang and all-black watches.

Hublot's popularity

Has Hublot's popularity waned?

Founded in 1980 by Carlo Crocco, a member of the founding family of the Italian watch and jewelry group Binda, Hublot is a hugely popular brand with numerous hit models, including the Big Bang, King Power, Aerobang, and Classic Fusion. Since its release, the Big Bang has garnered explosive attention, becoming as popular as Rolex and Omega.

However, some have suggested that Hublot's popularity has been declining recently, as the huge popularity boom led by Panerai has died down. In fact, with the exception of a few models, Hublot prices have actually been declining, but what is the reason for this? The conclusion is that "while their explosive popularity has subsided compared to the past, they continue to be popular and have investment value." The reasons for this include: 1) watches that use unique, innovative designs and materials; 2) prices tend to be high in the used market, where popularity is reflected in prices; and 3) the strong marketing skills cultivated under the LVMH (Louis Vuitton) group, as well as the outstanding status and rarity of the brand.

It can be said that Hublot continues to enjoy continued popularity. In particular, classic models such as the Big Bang and Classic Fusion remain popular and have high resale values, so why not take this opportunity to consider purchasing one?
